QUESTIONABLE DECISIONS

Questionable decisions: Text

"Anne [Frank] was a great girl. Hopefully, she would have been a Belieber.” - Justin Bieber 2013

That, ladies and gentlemen, is a celebrity with over 100 million Instagram followers. Someone that has been in the public eye for over 10 years. Can you imagine making that much of a fuck up and still have that many fans? I mean, he tried to take a pet monkey with him on tour ffs.

I did however still wear a purple American Apparel hoodie because he wore a purple American Apparel hoodie.

I spelt my name with a dollar sign cause Ke$ha spelt her name with a dollar sign.

Avril Lavigne had sweatbands so I had sweatbands.

Zoey 101 wore a key around her neck, you can see where this is going…

With the benefit of hindsight, I can look back and realise that not only where they terrible role models they were also terrible decisions.

We idolise some pretty weird people. Noel Fielding was one of the top celebrities idolised by millennials (in a survey we carried out). A man who claims that “it is impossible to be unhappy in a poncho”. Gemma Collins, or the big GC was also up there. That is a woman who thought Femfresh was deodorant. And of course, I can’t get Theroux this article without mentioning the living legend that is Louis Theroux.

What effect do these people have on our lives? Andy Warhol once said that “everyone will be famous for 15 minutes”. He was indeed, correct. With the help of social media everyone from @cashcats to a fat Jewish man (literally he is known as @thefatjewish) can have their shot at the limelight. How do you go from being Paris Hilton, a girl who made a sex tape to Paris Hilton, a millennial icon.

You win over the internet, that's how.

*mic drop*

Half of our generation would have no idea who Joe Biden is if it wasn’t for the memes coined out of his relationship with his bezzie 4 life, Obama.

I definitely wouldn’t have given a shit about the big GC if is wasn’t for the amazingly curated gifs of her that ping round in multiple group chats.

You may not know anything about Nick Young but I can bet your bottom dollar you’ve seen his meme. You know that dude that looks confused with questions marks round his head? Yer that’s Nick Young NBA basketball player.

You might think that the world of celebrity memes is bullshit and mindless. You sir, would be wrong. They create a sense of community, a way to break the ice. Few of us would walk in to a room and start talking about the anxieties within us, but throw in a picture of a grumpy cat and we have a discussion. With distance and humour, we become more open to talking about are true feelings. Feeling over emotional?  Michael Jordan crying is your man. Louis Theroux’s nerdy, self-effacing British charm can pretty much get you through any situation possible.

‘I wasn’t quite sure what I’d just seen, but I knew it was time to leave’

- Louis Theroux 2k10

Keep random celebrities famous - they bring warmth to my cold heart.
